Dr. Dudley Culp Beaty Jr. BENNETTSVILLE - Dr. Dudley Culp Beaty, Jr., 87, passed away on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at his home. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 28, 2014, at Sunset Memorial Park with Military Honors. A visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 27, 2014, at Burroughs-Cooper-Kiser Funeral Home. Born January 12, 1927, in Union, SC, he was son of the late Dudley Culp Beaty, Sr. and the late Kathleen James Beaty. He graduated from Union High School where he was the Vice President of the Student body, and the Captain of the football team his senior year. He attended The Citadel prior to his service in the United States Army in World War II, where he was in the Medical Corps in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he received a B.S. degree from Presbyterian College. In 1955 he received his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Southern College of Optometry. After receiving his Doctorate in Optometry in 1955, he started his practice, The Beaty Eye Clinic in Bennettsville, and continued practicing until he was 83. Dr. Beaty was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church for ten years, and later joined Thomas Memorial Baptist Church. He was the Crusade Chairman and President of the Marlboro County Cancer Society. He also worked on the Bicentennial Committee for Marlboro County. Dr. Beaty was also a former member of the Rotary Club since 1955, where he served as director on three different occasions. He was the president of the Pee Dee Optometric Society on two different occasions. Dr. Beaty also was a member of the Pee Dee, South Carolina, and American Optometric Associations, and the American Optometric Foundation. He served as a delegate from South Carolina for the American Optometric Association Convention in Hawaii in 1990. He was the Campaign Chairman of the United Way, and also its President for Marlboro County. Dr. Beaty was also a member of the American Legion for sixty years. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Kathleen Beaty Mayes. Dr. Beaty is survived by his wife, Patricia Knight Beaty of the home; sons, Dr. Dudley C. Beaty, III and wife, Sharon of Bennettsville, Daniel Culp Beaty of Bennettsville; daughters, Peggy Beaty of Bennettsville, Mary Melissa Beaty Joye of Mount Pleasant, and Dr. Elizabeth James Beaty of Bennettsville; and grandchildren, John Beaty, Mason Joye, and Eliza Joye.
