BY COREY DAVIS cdavis@theitem.com A Sumter County store owner remains in serious but stable condition at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital after undergoing surgery for a single gunshot wound to the stomach following an armed robbery Monday night, according to Sumter County Sheriff's Office authorities. Kings Highway on S.C. 261, was found on the floor behind the counter with a gunshot wound when authorities arrived to the store. He was flown by helicopter to Columbia for treatment. Investigators say Monday's shooting happened about 9:54 p.m. after three men came into the store and shot Dixon, who told authorities he shot back at the men. Dixon told deputies that the men left the scene in a gray or silver, possibly a Chevrolet, pick. Capt. Allen Dailey, narcotics and criminal investigations commander for the Sumter County Sheriff's Office, said a resident called Tuesday morning to inform deputies about an abandoned gray 2000 Chevrolet C1500 pick on the side of a roadway on Barnwell Drive, about a mile from the store. Dailey added the truc a residence in the 3300 block of S.C. 261, which is about five miles from Dixon's Shopping Plaza. "We believe that was the vehicle the suspects were in," Dailey said. According to Dailey, this was the third time since June the store has been robbed. The other two incidents happened in June on consecutive days, according to reports. One report shows that at about 5:45 a.m. June 8 two men wearing ski mase into the front door with a rifle after Dixon opened the store. As Dixon ran toward a rear exit, one of the robbers shot the rifle, which struck numerous cases of Bud Light beer, deputies said. While Dixon was outside, he heard another shot and saw the subjects get into a black Ford Expedition parked on Claremont Road on the side of the store. Deputies said $380 was found missing from the cash register. The store was again robbed the following day at about 8:20 p.m. In that incident, authorities said a witness saw a man wearing a black mask and dark-colored T-shirt come into the store with a black revolver and yell "give me the money" and fire two to three shots. The witness said the man ran through the store's kitchen, located next to the store's checkout desk, and out the back door. Deputies said the man told authorities the robber fled in a black Ford Explorer, headed north on S.C. 261 toward Camden, but he lost sight of it and returned to the store. The report shows that $1,756 was reported stolen. Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis said no arrests were made in the prior incidents.
