B., Indiana of Sumter, South Carolina FRANCES CAROLYN HUDSON Posted Monday, November 3, 2025 9:50 am Frances Carolyn Hudson, 88, died at Lexington County Community House-Agape Care on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2025. Born in Oswego on Oct. 19, 1937, she was a daughter of the late Ambrose H. Baker and the late Lula Jane Smith Baker. She was a 1956 graduate of Bishopville High School. She was last employed with Hopewell Nursing Home in Sumter as a bookkeeper. She was a member of Aldersgate Methodist Church and a long-time member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She had a long life filled with travel and living across the U.S. and Japan (including living in eight U.S. states) before moving back to her native Sumter County in 1977 with her career-military husband. Known for her superb cooking skills, especially her famous spaghetti, cakes and banana pudding, she loved scrapbooking memory items of her travels, sewing, watching “Days of Our Lives” and loving her large array of canines throughout the years, mostly her five dachshunds and Lucy the cat. Carolyn was predeceased by her brothers, Alpheaus James Baker (Letitia "Letty" Wysong Baker) and Marion Herman Baker, and niece, Debra Ann “Debbie” Stone. Surviving are: her husband of 69 years, Thomas Edward Hudson Jr. of Sumter; son, Joe Thomas Hudson (Larry Hembree) of Columbia; sister-in-law, Laura Ruth Baker; and nieces and nephews, Lynda Jane Carroll (Wylie) of Manning, Alpheus J. "Al" Baker Jr. (Laura) of Sumter, Sharon Jean Gallahar (Gerald P.) of Columbia and Marion Baker (Tamara) of Chapin. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2025, in the Elmore-Cannon Stephens Funeral Home Chapel, 515 Miller Road, Sumter, conducted by Gerald P. Gallahar. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park, 802 N. Guignard Drive, Sumter. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2025, at the funeral home. The family especially thanks Jane Carroll, Sharon Gallahar, Brenda Mettetal, Miss Mary and the staff at Lexington County Community House.
