Posted Tuesday, April 20, 2021 6:00 am Stephen Campbell "Steve" Mims Sr., 71, beloved husband of 50 years to Jean Ard Mims, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 17, 2021. Born on May 11, 1949, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Kenneth Oscar Mims Sr. and Evelyn Pope Campbell Mims. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He graduated from Edmunds High School in 1968. Steve had a tremendous love for his wife, family, friends, the outdoors and the University of South Carolina Gamecocks. He was a master electrician and former co-owner of Ridgeway Electric. He was the drummer for The Footnotes, who were inducted into the South Carolina R&B/Beach Music Hall of Fame in October of 2001. Survivors include his wife, Jean Ard Mims; sons, Stephen Campbell Mims Jr. and his wife, Lara, and Robert Brian Mims and his wife, Ashley; grandchildren, Stephen Campbell Mims III, Noah Lee Mims, Matthew Dylan Keller and Emaleigh Elise Mims; two sisters-in-law, Sandy Mims and Brenda Mims; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, David Connor Mims Sr. and Kenneth Oscar Mims Jr. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday in the Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Joseph James officiating. Pallbearers will be Steve Morris, Johnny Hilton, Brian Hatfield, Kenny Bell, Tom Ross, Burt Taylor, Charles Stafford, Hugh Hodge, Mark Bradley and Wayne Davis. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Piggly Wiggly Coffee Club. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church: Stained Glass Window Restoration Fund, 226 W. Liberty St., Sumter, SC 29150.
