Coroner: Man found dead in ditch hit by car- Manning - Preliminary autopsy results revealed a 78-year-old Manning man found dead in a ditch off U. S. 521 Saturday afternoon died after being struck by a vehicle, according to Clarendon County Coroner Hayes F. Samuels. • The body of James M. Jacobs of 139 Nelson Circle in Manning (South Carolina) was discovered lying face down in a ditch about seven miles east of Manning between the Wilson and Foreston communities around 4:30 p.m. • A homeless woman from Montana walkiing along the road discoverd the body, Samuels said. • An autopsy conducted Monday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Chalreston (South Carolina) revealed Jacobs died from injuries consistent with those of a hit-and-run victim. • “The Preliminary report siad his injuries showed he was hit by a vehicle of some sort,” Samuels said Tuesday morning. “The autopsy revealed several fractures, including blunt force trauma to the head and a broken neck.” • Tuesday afternoon, Samuels said he was waiting on a call from the pathologist’s office in Charleston with a time of death. He said the information is expected to come in today. • With the autopsy results pointing to a hit-and-run, the South Carolina Highway Patrol will be in charge of the investigation, according to the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office. • A neighbor living across the street from Jacobs called him a “very good neighbor,” who was quiet and minded his own business. • “It’s terrible, just terrible,” said 94-year-old Hattie Dean, Jacob’s neighbor. “I read about his death in the newspaper and it’s just horrible. He was very good, very quiet, a good neighbor.” • Dean said she talked with the Jacobs on the phone frequently. • “Up until recently, when she was ill, I talked with his wife almost every day,” Dean said. “They are good people. It’s just terrible to see something like this happen.” • Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of funeral arrangements. Coroner: Christmas Eve death ruled accidental - Manning - The death of a Manning man found in a ditch along U.S. 521 on Christmas Eve has been ruled accidental, according to Clarendon County Coroner Hayes Samuels. • The body of 78-year-old James M. Jacobs of 139 Nelson Circle was found lying in a ditch about 4:30 p.m. Dec. 24 by Josephine L. Negaard-Wright, 34, of Missouri, according to the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office. Officials, using a wallet they found on the man, identified the body at the scene. • On Dec. 26, Samuels sent the body to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston for an autopsy. Samuels said the initial autopsy indicated Jacobs might have been the victim of a hit-and-run because of a would on his head. Preliminary autopsy results indicated Jacobs died from cervical vertebra spine fractures and blunt force trauma to the head, but the time of death couldn’t be determined, Samuels said. • “The final autopsy report said he died from asphyxiation and drowning.” Samuels said Wednesday. “The wound they initially thought was caused by blunt force trauma was actually caused by animals. The death has been ruled accidental.” • “We received a telephone call that the wounds...were consistent with that of a hit-and-run, and we turned the matter over at that point to the Highway Patrol,” Investigator Rudy Tisdale of the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office said Dec. 28. • On that day, the state Highway Patrol’s Major Accident Identification Team investigated the site where Jacob’s body was discovered, Samuels said. • On Dec. 29, Lance Cpl. Josef Robinson of the State Highway Patrol said the identification team’s investigation didn’t recover any evidence to substantiate that a vehicle hit Jacobs. [2, 5] |
