  HIST	News - Obituaries Thursday, May. 14, 2009 Gaither “Gator” Allison Simpson SUMTER — Gaither “Gator” Allison Simpson, 72, husband of Mary Alice Berry Simpson, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at his home. Born in Atkins, SC, he was the son of the late Robert and Irene Amerson Simpson. Mr. Simpson attended Wise Drive Church of the Nazarene. He retired from Palmetto Baking Company with 39 years of service and continued working as an independent building contractor. He was an avid golfer until his illness. Surviving are his wife of 52 years; a daughter, Lisa Coker and her husband Randy, a son, Gaither “Buddy” Simpson, Jr. and his wife Merri, all of Sumter; two sisters, Jackie Motley of Sumter and Ruby Lockwood of Columbia; three grandchildren, Jonathan and Laura Coker, and Barry Simpson. He was preceded in death by a brother, Lloyd Simpson and a sister, Jeanne “Cricket” Ruggles. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with Pastor Sammy Geddings officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Chuck Osborne, Richard Bradham, Jimmy Floyd, Randy Cubbage, Sid McGhee and Billy Freeman. Honorary pallbearers will be Mac Geddings, Gus Pringels, Jack Galloway, Franz Johnson, and Wyman Taylor. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Wise Drive Church of the Nazarene, P.O.
