Spellings of the Gerald name are Gerald, Garrell, Jerrall. It is believed that the original name was Fitzgerald (from Ireland).
"James Gerald was an Irish Patriot of "The House of FitzGerald" and fled Ireland. He settled in North Carolina and dropped the "Fitz" from Fitzgerald". (Mike Arnold, Gerald Researcher).
James was among the Irish Patriots, being overpowered by the British, who left their native land and settled first in North Carolina. To escape detention after their arrival in this country the name was shortened by dropping the "Fitz" and they have since been known as "Gerald".
