| HIST | of Summerville, South Carolina Batten used gift of basketball to excel BY MICHAEL CHRISTOPHER mchristopher@theitem.com From the time she began playing basketball on the Salem Schools junior varsity team, Cathy Coker knew she possessed a God-given talent and she didn't want it to go to waste. Coker, now known as Cathy Batten, went on to have an illustrious high school and college basketball career and is one of 11 people who are part of the second Clarendon Athletic Hall of Fame class. The ceremony will take place on Saturday at the Manning Junior High School gymnasium beginning at 6 p.m. "I knew that I had talent; God gave me the talent, but, of course, everything is given through him and you have to work at it," Batten said. "I kind of felt like if you don't use (your talent) or don't work at it, you might not have that talent anymore. "I thank God for it and the coaches and teammates who got me the ball," she added. "I kept telling them that I couldn't score if they couldn't get me the ball." Batten was a standout at Salem from 1981-84 where she averaged 20.4 points, 12.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists a game. In addition to leading the Lady Eagles to the state championship her senior year, she was honored by having her jersey retired. Her talent on the hardwood translated into a full scholarship to Baptist College, now known as Charleston Southern University. As a freshman, Batten earned the title as team captain, and she kept it throughout her collegiate career. When her career at Baptist was over, she was the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,507 points. That record held until 1996; today she is still second. "I had a lot of good teammates and coaches and I couldn't do it without them, that's for sure," Batten said. When she heard she was nominated for the Hall, Batten didn't even know it existed. "For me, it means a little bit more just because it's my home," she said. "I've been gone for so long, and I haven't lived there in 20-something years so it was nice to know to that my family will be there." Family support has always been important to Batten. She said it was the support of her family and coaches that kept her at ease no matter how she performed. "They always got me to practice and were always there watching me," said Batten, a physical education teach at Spann Elementary School in Summerville. "I knew I had the support whether we won or lost. It didn't really matter whether I did good or not. I had no pressure to score. (they) didn't put pressure on me, they just let me play and have fun. "That's the way it should be, and I think sometimes the kids will succeed," she said. "Just let them have fun and they'll do better."
