Company employees and officials learned that two of their own — Brenda Langston Ross, production assistant and safety director, and founder Edward Henry Fienning — died Sunday. Ross, 60, of 882 Watley Drive, was killed after the 2005 Dodge minivan she was driving eastbound on U.S. 76/378 in Richland County was struck head-on by a 1996 Nissan Quest minivan that was traveling the wrong direction on the eastbound lanes, said Lance Cpl. Josef Robinson of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The driver of the wrong-way vehicle, whose identity was only given as a 53-year-old male from Hopkins, and Ross were pronounced dead at the scene at 7:37 p.m., according to the highway patrol. Calls to the Richland County Coroner's Office seeking the identity of the other driver were not returned. Sumter County Coroner Harvin Bullock identified Ross as the driver of the van that was going the right direction on Garners Ferry Road near Blue Johnson Road in Lower Richland County, near Hopkins. Mickey Fordham, who as production manager was Ross' supervisor, said she will be "sorely missed." "She went out of her way to try to help people," he said. "She was a go-getter and a strong person." Ross had worked for Sumter Packaging since 1993. She not only made sure workers were safe, but also did much behind the scenes. "You don't realize what everybody has their hands in till you start getting down into it and really digging," Fordham said. "We've got our Christmas dinner coming up Friday. She was the coordinator for that, too. And she kept up with all the supplies for the janitorial stuff." Ross had to deal with a difficult loss of her own earlier this year. Her husband, Wayne, died on June 22 at the University of Tennessee Medical Center from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle wreck. Wayne Ross, 57, graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1971 and was a retired truck driver. "He had a motorcycle accident in May and was in a coma for a month," Fordham said. "She has gone through some struggles." Fienning was 93. He founded Sumter Packaging in 1980. He died in his sleep, surrounded by friends and family, said his son, Charles, who is the board chairman at Sumter Packaging. Ed Fienning had played piano at nursing homes on Hilton Head as recently as two weeks ago. "Dad was so much fun," Charles Fienning said, adding that his father was an avid fisherman, hunter and golfer. "But his main claim to fame was his piano playing." And his packaging businesses. Ed Fienning established the Kankakee Container Co. in Kankakee, Ill., in 1958. Sumter Packaging Corp. was his second box plant, which he opened in 1980. In 1994, he opened South Corr Packaging in Asheboro, N.C. "Even though he was in his 90s, he still made appearances here," Fordham said. "He, too, will be sorely missed."
