| HIST | Date Published: December 2, 2008 ELIZABETH T. MCELVEEN Sarah Elizabeth Thomas McElveen, 85, wife of Joseph Thomas "J.T." McElveen Sr., died Sunday, November 30, 2008, at the Tuomey Healthcare System. Born August 29, 1923, in Clarendon County, she was the oldest of the five children of the late Frank Watson Thomas and Lois Maye Folsom Thomas. After graduating from Hartsville High School with honors, Elizabeth and her sister Frances moved to Sumter to work for the telephone company. While working in Sumter, Elizabeth met her husband of 64 years. In April of 1944, Elizabeth traveled with Lucille Mims McElveen, her future mother-in-law, to Boise, Idaho where J.T. was awaiting deployment to fight in World War II so Elizabeth and J.T. could marry before his departure for England. The couple was married on April 12, 1944, by a Methodist minister in Boise. After her marriage, Elizabeth worked for Waters Florist on Loring Place before she and her husband opened Empire Ice Cream Company. She and her husband were the owners and operators of Empire Ice Cream Company and Empire Cycle Company on Liberty Street in Sumter for over 50 years. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church. In addition to her husband, Elizabeth is survived by her son, Joseph Thomas "Joe" McElveen Jr. and his wife, Kathryn Watson "Kathy" McElveen, her daughter, Martha McElveen Horne and husband Terrell Thomas "Terry" Horne and four grandchildren, Joseph Thomas "Thomas" McElveen III, Kathryn Watson "Kate" McElveen, Elizabeth McElveen Horne, and Joseph Tyler "Tyler" Horne, all of Sumter. She is also survived by one brother, Charles Thomas and wife Delene of Hartsville; two sisters, Frances Thomas Tew of Cary, N.C., and Ruth Thomas Cartee of Hartsville; one sister-in-law, Alice Stuckey Thomas of Hartsville; numerous nieces and nephews; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Wilbur Thomas. Elizabeth was a loving and devoted wife who worked alongside her husband throughout their marriage. She was also a loving and devoted mother and grandmother who taught her children to love God, work hard, and honor their commitments and she lovingly helped her children pass those values on to her grandchildren. Elizabeth loved the Lord, and she served Him by showing kindness, patience, and grace to everyone. Elizabeth knew she would go Home to be with her Savior when she died, and it was her prayer that she will someday see us all again in Heaven.
