HIST | It is believed that Eusebius Stone came from Virginia to South Carolina before 1770 and died before 1790. Eusebius Stone was clearly in South Carolina during the Revolutionary War time period due to the 1775 militia records found for him in South Carolina (see below). Eusebius is also listed in William Murrell's Camden District Tax List of 1785 as owning 150 acres of land in the Camden District. In 1786, he was granted 640 acres of land in Camden District, probably for his service in the war. In 1789, Eusebius sells 200 acres of his grant land to Dorcas Helton. He signs the deed so he is still alive at this time. He does not appear in the 1790 census. And in 1791, his wife (widow?) and son James sell more of his grant land. Eusebius is probably dead by this time, i.e., between 1789 and 1792. Family tradition says that after Eusebius died, his children fought over the land. They finally sold all of it and moved out west sometime around 1800. Eucebius Stone lived on Nasty Branch near Privateer, Sumter County, SC. It is south of Sumter City, the Seaboard Railway line crosses it just west of US Hwy 15. Nasty Branch runs right back of Bethel Baptist Church. George Brown stated that Eusebius was buried at the old Osteen Place. I have several reasons to believe that this was the Weston-Osteen Cemetery. There were as many as 20 burials here but only three markers have survivied. They are thought to have been distroyed when the area was logged. To get to the cemetery, travel from Sumter on Hwy. 378 East, go for approximately 5 miles from the center of town. Turn left on Simpson Rd., Rd. #948, the cemetery is located approximately .5 miles down Simpson Rd. and 200 yards to the right, behind Thomas Jackson home. The drawing on page 207 of "History of Sumter County" by Gregorie of the Jonathan Weston farm indicates the location of the cemetery. (Thomas Jackson's mother was Cecilia Stone, daughter of Eusebius Stone, Eusebius was his grandfather.) The three marked graves remaining are those of Sarah E. McGrew, b. Apr. 25, 1850, d. Jan. 1, 1901, Lawrence M. Rembert, b. Oct. 23 1841, d. June 11, 1906, and Mrs. Minerva J. Rembert, b. July 20, 1812, d. Sept. 29, 1896. *** Index to Revolutionary War Service Records, Vol. IV, S-Z: "Sabe, Pvt. in Singleton's Troops of Light Horse in SC". (Also, there is a William Stone listed as a Captain in the 1st. Is that clear? The tract would have been a bit south of where Furman High School is located. Nasty Branch is in Sumter County, off of Hwy US 15 on Bethel Church Road. Nasty Branch runs right back of Bethel Baptist Church. Probably it is on your map - the term "waters of Black River" is rather confusing; it just means that the waters of the Branch ultimately end up there, so to speak. Nasty Branch is south of Sumter city - my map shows that the Seaboard Railway line crosses it just west of US Hwy 15; near Bethel Church. Scape Ore is short for escaped whore.....I am at home so do not have the complete story....maps show it today and signs on the road show it as "Scape Ore"........think the story was that there was a tavern near this stream and swamp and that authorities raided it as there was prostitution there (I heard that this occurred during the Revolutionary War. The prostitutes frequented that area because of the soldiers.) ...the woman involved escaped into the nearby swamp....giving this stream the name of "escaped whore"....which became "scape ore"......I have not heard if she was ever found.....however....isn't this the same place where "lizard man" resided and came out one night and terrified a young black man.....story was picked up on national news and Bishopville and Sheriff Liston Baily became worldwide known names for a few weeks....I even had a lizard man T-shirt....maybe Lizard man knew of the "scape ore"?????? on another subject....think Boots Branch is a stream that empties into nasty branch....Nasty Branch was called that as a lady fell from either a horse or buggy and got all muddy......she said "Oh---What a nasty branch" The sheriff in my previous message was identified as Liston Bailey.....(Liston Bailey is long time friend)...thnk the correct name of the sheriff in the Lizard man case is Liston Truesdale.....corrections and addtional information are welcome........incidently....I have never been able to find the "Rocky Bluff" in Rocky Bluff swamp.....but this area has a good many stones...... (Mayor Bubba McElveen) ********* The Eusebea Stone tract was located with Nasty Branch flowing through it, a little south and west of the point where Red Oak Branch flows into Bush Branch, making Bethel Creek which flows into Nasty Branch. Is that clear? You can get very detailed maps from the USGS for a small fee ($4-5); this area map is called the Privateer Quadrangle (SC)There do not seem to be a lot of landmarks nearby; the tract would have been a bit south of where Furman High School is located. Maybe someone who lives in the area could give some current directions.(Mayorbubba, are you listening?) I am trying to figure out how to post a listing of the grants and deeds I have plotted to the list. Remember that I am no expert in Sumter County (have never actually been there) but worked on these in hopes light would be shed on my specific ancestors, Shadrach Rogers and William Nelson West. So the area I have worked on is VERY limited - Carol York Here is a table of the deeds and grants I have plotted. Not all have been exactly placed as yet. Also the names of the grantors are truncated in the table - eg, Hezekiah Nettles. SC as the grantor means the item is a grant. Happy to discuss further with anyone interested. I am using Deedmapper and I will try to post the whole thing to their website for anyone else who is using DM to work on deeds in the Nasty Branch area.
