Fickling Sr. James Alexander Fickling Sr., 88, widower of Bertie Mae Parker Fickling, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born on Dec. 25, 1924, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Francis Walker Fickling Sr. and Thelma Troublefield Fickling. Mr. Fickling was a member of Bethesda Church of God. He was the retired owner and operator of Fickling’s Garage, which he established in 1951. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Post 15. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a member of the 563rd Anti-Aircraft Unit. He fought at the Battle of the Bulge, the Normandy invasion and Ramogan. His decorations include the American Theater Campaign Medal, the EAMET Campaign Medal with three bronze stars, the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal. Surviving are two sons, James A. “Jimmy” Fickling Jr., and wife, Bitsey, of Manning, and Steve P. Fickling and wife, Vicki, of Wedgefield; one daughter, Sandy Elmore and husband, Wayne, of Sumter; one brother, Francis “Smokey” Fickling and wife, Hazel, of Sumter; eight grandchildren, Kirk McLeod III and wife, Stephanie, Ryan McLeod and wife, Wendy, Chad McLeod and wife, Katie, Windy Brown and husband, Eddie, Misty Hatfield and husband, Lee, Heidi Drawdy and husband, Glen, Kelly Reardon and husband, Ben, Bretta Richburg and husband, Kevin; 26 great-grandchildren; two step-grandsons, Wayne Elmore Jr. and wife, Susan, Bryan Elmore and wife, Amanda; two step-granddaughters, Savanna Epps Welch and husband, Dexter, and Vanessa Epps; a brother-in-law, Robert Galloway of Sumter; and a faithful friend, David Russell. He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Galloway. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Eugene Mosier officiating. Burial will be in the Troublefield cemetery in Wedgefield. Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law. The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Sandy Elmore, 652 Mattison Ave. There will also be a visitation from 3 to 5 p.m. today at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.
