MONTAGUE Sr. Posted Monday, January 16, 2006 7:00 pm Larry DuPre Montague Sr., 91, husband of Virginia "Snookie" Thorne Montague, died Monday, Jan. 16, 2006, at Covenant Place. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late B.L. Montague and the late Marie DuPre Montague. Mr. Montague was a lifelong resident of Sumter and graduated from the Sumter city schools in 1932. He returned to Sumter in 1937 and worked for the B.L. Montague Co. until 1991, when he retired. He was a former member of the Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island, where he served as deacon and elder. In 1990, he became a member of First Presbyterian Church in Sumter. Surviving are his wife of Sumter; two sons, Bert L. Montague II and wife, Linda, and Larry D. Montague Jr. and wife, Karen; a daughter, Virginia "Ginger" Montague Carter; a sister, Helen M. James, all of Sumter; seven grandchildren, Nancy Cromer and husband, Perron, Zan Edens and wife, Kaye, Ashley Edens, L.D. Montague III, Dixon Montague, Rebecca Montague, Mary Montague; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Marie M. Kurzenberger. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Zane Moore and the Rev. Dr. Hal Salisbury officiating. Private burial will be held at Sumter Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the church parlor and other times at the home of his son, Bert Montague, 1711 Appaloosa Drive. Larry Montague Sr., 91, died Monday. The next day, his wife, Virginia “Snookie” Montague, 88, died also. Their children are mourning the loss of their parents, but are happy the two did not have to live long without each other. • “What a wonderful way to end 66 years together,” son Bert Montague said. “God, in His grace, took them home together.” • Bert said the family had no idea the two would die so closely together. Larry Montague Sr. died at Covenant Place, where he spent the last months of his life. Virginia Montague died at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. • Bert said he and his siblings had visited his father on Sunday to tell him they were worried about their mother and to inform him they didn’t think she was going to get any better. His father told him he wanted to try to visit her the next day. • “And then my sister GInger called me about 6 o’clock the next morning and said Daddy died in his sleep,” Bert said. “So, I guess he needed to go up there and get things ready for her.” • Though his mother never knew of her husband’s death before she died Tuesday, Bert said it was almost as if she did. “I feel like she knew in a way,” he said. • Born in Sumter, South Carolina, Larry D. Montague Sr. was a son of the late B. L. Montague and the late Marie DuPre Montague. Mr. Montague was a lifelong resident of Sumter and graduated from the Sumter city schools in 1932. • He returned to Sumter in 1937 and worked for the B. L. Montague Company until 1991 when he retired. • He was a former member of the Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island, (South Carolina) where he served as deacon and elder. In 1990, he became a member of FIrst Presbyterian Church in Sumter. • Virginia “Snookie” Thorne Montague was also born in Sumter, the daughter of the late Frank Howard Thorne and the late Talitha Vick Thorne. • After graduating from the Sumter city schools, she was trained at the Episcopal Eye and Ear Hospital in Washington, D. C., and worked for doctors in North Carolina and Sumter. During World War II, she was a volunteer nurse’s aide at Tuomey (Hospital). She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Presbyterian Women and the Helen Murray Bible Study Class. • Ginger Montague Carter said her parents were very well suited for one another, complementing each other in all areas. • “They were perfect matches,” Carter said. “My daddy was ... intellectual and looked at all the different aspects of everything before he made a decision, and momma was always the caring, feeling one that thought with her heart.” • Memorial services for both will be held at 2 p.m. today (19 Jan 2006) at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. Zane Moore and the Rev.
