| HIST | James was a Lieutenant under Colonel Richardson, in the Snow Campaign of Nov. 1775; and was also Lieutenant in Colonel Thomson’s regiment of Rangers in the Continental army, but resigned 26 Mar 1778. He again, however, took service with the State militia, rose to the rank of Captain and was in command of an outpost on Sullivan’s Island at the time of the surrender of Charleston. Returning to Camden, it is said he guided Colonel Washington to Rugeley’s Fort. After the Revolution he was offered many offices but would accept no other than that of Captain of militia. In 1798 he sold his land at Camden, and moved to the neighborhood of Milledgeville, Georgia., where he died. His children are taken from family records. [1] | |
