Singleton Jr. Richard Richardson Singleton Jr., 82, widower of Vermelle Grooms Singleton, died Monday, Oct. 31, 2011, at his home. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Richard Richardson Singleton Sr. and Priscilla Annie Kolb Singleton White. Mr. Singleton was a charter member of New Calvary Baptist Church. He was a retired captain with the Sumter Fire Department and was owner and operator of Singleton Well Drilling Co. Surviving are one son, Robbie Singleton (Donna) of Sumter; three daughters, Cindy DuBose (David), Debbie Montalbano (William) and Angie Wixey (Ken), all of Sumter; two sisters, Margaret Craft Simpson and Shirley Roberson, both of Sumter; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, Richard Glenn Singleton; and two sisters, Beulah Daniels and Dorothy Lambert Young. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Underwood officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery. Pallbearers will be members of the Sumter Fire Department. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of his daughter, 4 Glenwood Drive. The family would like to express special thanks to Amedisys Home Health & Hospice for their loving care. Memorials may be made to New Calvary Baptist Church, 38 Center St., Sumter, SC 29150.
